People in the UK can have a "great influence" over the cost of life insurance by making changes in their lifestyle, according to an expert.
Kieran Platt, the director of insurance provider Life Direct, has said that people can lower the price of premiums by both not smoking and also improving their weight.
He added that insurance companies do not tend to focus on the fitness of a person, just their body mass index.
"After that they start looking at medical conditions that you've got and obviously a lot of medical conditions you can't do much about," he explained.
"Weight and smoking are the two major factors where you can have a great influence over your life insurance premium."
A recent study by Norwich Union in March found that 37 per cent of people without life cover have either not thought about taking it out or have it on their 'to do' list.
It also revealed that 44 per cent of people decided to purchase life insurance after buying their first home.
